University of Beer, a full-service restaurant at 1510 16th St., Suite 300, closed earlier last week for remodeling to introduce Shipwrecked Tiki Bar, a new concept created by the same owners. Nate and Melissa Yungvanitsait opened the first Shipwrecked location in Davis last year.

The Midtown University of Beer opened in 2014 and was the chain’s second location. The chain still has sites in Davis, East Sacramento, Folsom, Rocklin, Roseville, and Vacaville. The decision to close came after normal usage left a mark on the building.

Nate Yungvanitsait told the Business Journal about the decision to convert it into a Tiki Bar: “After 10 years in that space and all of the normal wear and tear, it was time to give it a face-lift. We’ve really enjoyed the Shipwrecked concept since we opened last year so we’ve decided to pivot.”

Shipwrecked Tiki Bar was a new addition to the Yungvanitsaits’s portfolio. The concept specializes in high-end rum drinks, using premium options like Plantaray O.F.T.D Overproof and Plantaray Isle of Fiji Double Barrel. The bar also has its version of 1944 Mai Tai that blends four of the bar’s premium rum options.

What Now Sacramento reached out to the owners for comments but hadn’t heard back by the time of this coverage. According to the Business Journal, the owners hope to open the tiki bar concept in October.
